BARTOW, Fla. (WFLA) —  A Polk County professor on trial for faking a will stand trial again. David Broxterman claims he’s the one who was duped. But, after hours of deliberation Thursday, a jury couldn’t agree. A judge declared a mistrial.

Broxterman was a professor at Polk State College for five years and had rave reviews. Then, his fake documents were exposed.

“He lied multiple times, everyday, and went into class and said he was Dr. Broxterman,” Prosecutor Michael Hrdlicka said.

Broxterman claims he was a scammed victim. There’s no question his PhD diploma and transcripts were forged. The question is, by who?

“Does anyone have direct evidence that David Broxterman created those diplomas? Created those transcripts? Polk State, in the application process, they believed too,” Defense Attorney Rusty Franklin said.

On the stand Broxterman claimed he paid a professor at the University of South Florida $5,000 to help him get his doctorate. He testified he even gave his dissertation

Prosecutors don’t buy it.

“He applied for that job anyway and knew his PhD was fake. He got money he wasn’t entitled to, in a position he wasn’t entitled to,” Hrdlicka said. “He proceeded for four years to scheme to defraud Polk State College and the state of Florida.”

The prosecution says Broxterman defrauded the school around $250,000.

After a three day trial, and hours of deliberation, it was a hung jury. Jurors were split five to one. It’s a chapter left open, for now.

“We’re going to deploy again and move into the battlefield, hopefully new ammunition, and we’ll be stronger, and newer, and we will win this war,” Broxterman said.

A pretrial has been scheduled for June 14 of this year.

Because of this incident, Polk State College has changed its hiring practices. They have hired a third-party company to verify applicants’ degrees.WHAT OTHERS ARE CLICKING ON RIGHT NOW:
