TAMPA, FL (WFLA) – Metropolitan Ministries is helping one of the most vulnerable groups to combat the Zika virus. Starting Monday the charity will give anti-mosquito kits to the homeless. The kits include a net, bug spray, spray for clothing, and tablets to put in areas with standing water.
“I’ve been in Florida for 10 years and every year I run into a family sleeping by the Courtney Campbell, in a park, or in the woods,” Tim Marks, President and CEO of Metropolitan Ministries said. “They’ve all complained about bug bites and now with Zika the risk is even higher.”
Governor Rick Scott just announced this week he’s allocating more than $26 million in state funds to prevent the virus in Florida. Florida reports more than 200 cases. The Tampa Bay area already has more than a dozen.
“Our end goal is for self-sufficiency but those who can’t get out of the situation or maybe they’re on a waiting list we will help now,” Marks said. “In our mission statement is to alleviate suffering and that’s what we’re trying to do.”
Those in need can pick up the kits at the Metropolitan Ministries’ Outreach Center, 2002 N. Florida Ave. in Tampa beginning Monday from 8:30 a.m. till 5 p.m. You can also help by dropping off supplies for the kits or extra clothing.
