Mazda is recalling select Mazda3 cars because a defective electrical part can fail, leaving drivers unable to use their windshield wipers, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
The NHTS says that the wipers reduce visibility which can raise the risk of a crash. According to Consumer Reports, Mazda says it will replace the module that controls the wipers with a new version at no charge to owners.
Vehicles involved include 187,798 of the 2016-2018 Mazda3 cars, built from July 20, 2015, through July 18, 2017.
Mazda says it will begin notifying affected owners in early June 2019. A spokesman for the automaker told Consumer Reports that there have been no reports of accidents or injuries related to this issue. Owners may contact Mazda customer service at 800-222-5500. Mazda’s number for this recall is 3219D.
