TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) – Miami Marlins player Jose Fernandez, who was killed over the weekend in a boating accident in Miami, will be remembered in the Bay area Wednesday night.

The ace pitcher played for Alonso High School, helping the baseball team win state championships during his sophomore and senior years.

Former coaches, current players and students plan to remember Fernandez during a candlelight vigil on Wednesday night.

Coaches tell News Channel 8 that Fernandez would occasionally return to the school and help young players craft their game.

Fernandez fled his native Cuba when he was just 15. He and his mother settled in Hillsborough County.

Investigators explain Fernandez and two friends were killed when the boat they were in hit a jetty at full-speed early Sunday morning. All three men were pronounced dead on scene.
