Manteca Police: 6 teens injured by explosive device thrown into backyard

MANTECA, CA (NBC) – Six teens were injured when an explosive device was thrown into a backyard party in California, police said early Saturday.

The Manteca Police Department said officers responded to reports of “numerous” injuries from an explosion at a local home shortly before midnight.

A preliminary investigation revealed that around sixty high-school aged “kids” were attending a party at the home when “an unknown subject intentionally threw an explosive device over a fence” into the backyard, according to police.

“The device exploded in close proximity to the party goers, injuring many of them,” the force said in a statement, adding that five of the six victims were being treated at local hospitals.

Police said two of the victims’ injuries were serious and that one of the wounded needed to be airlifted to a Bay Area hospital. The victims were between the ages of 15 and 18, according to the force.
