A serial killer who stalked and murdered at least eight women in Tampa Bay is set to be executed in less than three weeks. Bobby Joe Long is due in court today for a hearing where his attorneys will argue that lethal injection is cruel and unusual punishment. Long’s attorney says his client suffers from epilepsy and they will argue that lethal injection isn’t good for his health condition and will ask for another method for him to go out.
Last month Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed a death warrant for one of Tampa Bay’s most well-known serial killers. Long, now 65, was convicted of killing eight women in Hillsborough County and at least two other women in Pinellas and Pasco counties in the 1980s.
News Channel 8 spoke exclusively with a former prosecutor on the case and he said he’s glad to see the victim’s families get some sort of justice after all these years.
“Ugh, he was an absolute sicko. He is an arrogant son of a b. He was an arrogant guy. He used to go, his big start was rapes. He would answer ads where the parents were trying to sell their baby furniture. So he would go to the house hoping to find the little girl or the mommy there,” said Allen Allweiss, former prosecutor.
Long is due in court at 9:15 a.m.
