TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — America’s sweetest race took place in Tampa Sunday morning.

The Hot Chocolate Race kicked off at 7 a.m. at the Tampa Convention Center with a 5K. A 15K race started at 7:45 a.m.

Once the run is over, the real fun begins at a party with music, food and, of course, hot chocolate. Each runner gets a finisher’s mug filled with cocoa.

The first Hot Chocolate Race was held in Chicago back in 2008. Since then, more than 200,000 people have taken part in the race.

The race series has raised more than $1 million for event charities.

The Make-A-Wish Foundation is the official charity of the race, according to organizers.

One boy who benefitted from Make-A-Wish was in attendance Sunday morning in Tampa and talked about his experience with News Channel 8. You can watch the interview by clicking the video above.
