Patronis discusses new tax exemptions for hurricane season

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — Chief Financial Officer (CFO) Jimmy Patronis held a press conference in Tampa, Tuesday morning to highlight the Home Hardening Tax Exemption Initiative.

Championed by CFO Patronis, and signed into law by Governor Ron DeSantis, the Home Hardening Tax Exemption is a two-year, $462 million statewide sales tax exemption period on impact-resistant doors, garage doors, and windows to allow Floridians to harden their home against storms.

“This is the state of Florida giving incentive to our citizens by giving their buying power back in those dollars 100% of them in this particular case could stay right in Florida, that’s a great win win for the taxpayers,” said Patronis.

The temporary sales tax exemption period begins July 1, 2022 and, ends June 30, 2024.

To maximize your savings, Patronis said Floridian’s will also want to apply for the “My Safe Florida Home Program,” which was passed in the recent special legislative session. State lawmakers approved $150 million so homeowners could get grant money to make improvements to their homes.

Patronis said there is up to $10,000 available to each household.

“Ultimately between the sales tax savings and grant dollars we’re going to put $612 of tax payer dollars, your dollars, back into your pocket in order to strengthen your homes,” he said.

Patronis discussed the initiative at South Window Solutions, 10741 Crossroads Commerce Boulevard in Tampa. You can watch the event in the video player above.
