PASCO COUNTY, Fla. (WFL) — The Pasco County School District is holding a school safety town hall that could answer a lot of questions you may have about your child’s safety at school.

The district already decided to hire a director of school safety and as many as 50 school safety officers.

This comes as many school districts are adopting new plans under the guardian program.

“I think everyone has a heightened state of awareness. in fact our tips since parkland about suspicious acts, incidents or people has gone up so that’s great,” says Lt. Troy Fergueson with the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office.

There will be two workshops.

The first one is Wednesday at River Ridge Middle/High School in New Port Richey. It is from 6 to 8 p.m.

The second session is next Monday, May 7 at Wiregrass Ranch High School at the same time.

Leaders will discuss new school safety laws that schools, law enforcement and mental health professionals must comply with. There will also be time for questions to be answered.

School leaders tell us the workshops are important because they want everyone to feel comfortable with some of the changes which include adding armed safety officers at schools, including elementary schools.

Leaders are already making changes now to keep kids safe.

“People tend to get lax, and ‘oh I know you, just go on through. I know your child.’ What we are requiring and really holding the school’s feet to the fire about is you come in, you swipe your license through the raptor system and it does the quick check,” says Pasco School Superintendent Kurt Browning.
