HERNANDO COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA) – Talk about the lowest of the low during this COVID-19 crisis.
A thief broke into the Humane Society of the Nature Coast’s shed Sunday night and stole 90 percent of their supplies.
According to the shelter’s Facebook post, the thief or thieves stole almost all the dog and cat food, detergent, towels, two generators, lawn equipment, toilet paper, hand sanitizers, bleach, event tents, lawn equipment and even took a garden hose where the pups would have their bowls filled outside on a hot day.
Humane Society Director Susana Arneson, was shocked when she arrived at work Monday morning after a holiday weekend. She was instantly heartbroken and felt sick to her stomach.
“To come this morning and say, ‘Okay, today starts another day, let’s be positive.’ For someone so heartless to take this away from us,” she explained before breaking down in tears. “I just don’t understand.”
The thieves broke in through a nearby fence near Wiscon Road during the holiday weekend.
All it took was a few hours, the shelves were left bare. Susana called the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office and worked with detectives throughout the day to find out who did this.
“Why do this,” Arneson asked. “Why would someone take from these animals? Why? I don’t understand where people coming from, I just don’t.”
After Arneson met with detectives, she broke down and cried in her office, wondering how she would care for these rescue animals who have already gone through so much.
“It takes somebody heartless to take from somebody who’s voiceless,” Susana told 8 on your Side.
