Christmas is a holiday that reminds us to strive for peace on earth.

However, there isn’t a lot of peace on Capitol Hill. As a partial government shutdown is in effect, Congress and the White House are struggling to come to terms.

As a result, we’re seeing impacts in the Tampa Bay area.

On this fine Christmas morning, many families enjoyed the beautiful gift of the great outdoors.

“It’s great! Got to see some dolphins out there,” said Stephen Roden, visiting from Michigan.

“Just wanted to enjoy the outside and be in the warm weather while it’s Christmas. We can’t do that, definitely not in North Carolina,” said visitor Tim Morris.

These people came to enjoy the sights and the historical sites at Desoto National Memorial. It commemorates Spanish conquistador Hernando de Soto, who explored this area of Florida in 1539.

“I’m thanking God for my life and how healthy I am…come to this beautiful, beautiful park, totally love it, peaceful, wonderful way to spend my Christmas,” said Joan.

“Looks like it’s a hidden find,” said Mitchell Katz.

People couldn’t help but notice the signs posted out front.

Part of the reason it’s so serene is because no one is working here this week.

This park was affected by the partial government shutdown.

Congress and the president are at a stalemate over border security.

During this partial shutdown, more than 800,000 federal employees have been impacted, along with numerous agencies, including national parks.

“It’s kind of a shame. It’d be even better today if the park was open and the bathrooms open, the visitors center. It’s just a shame,” said Katz.

This shutdown could last into the new year.

“Democrats, Republicans are both to blame. They should be working together. We’re a united people. They’re dividing us and that is unfair to all of us,” said Joan.

However, many aren’t letting some bickering politicians ruin their holiday.

Christmas isn’t about differences or division. It’s about love and family.

“It’s Christmas no matter where you are and what you do. It’s still Christmas Day,” said Kevin Morris.
