A man is dead after a Citrus County Sheriff’s deputy shot and killed him Friday night.

Around midnight, the Citrus County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a call in reference to a suicidal man.

Once deputies arrived at the 5699 Sandalwood Way residence, they attempted to make contact with the man at the front door.

Deputies say they were unsuccessful and began to search the outside of the home.

While in the front yard, deputies say they saw the man across the street in a wooded area.

Deputies say they noticed a firearm and asked the man to lower and drop his weapon as they approached.

After refusing their commands, deputies say they shot the armed man.

He was pronounced dead at the scene. No deputies were injured during the incident

As with any deputy-involved shooting, the Florida Department of Law Enforcement is on scene and investigating this case.

Following agency policy, deputies involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave with pay, pending the outcome of the preliminary FDLE investigation.
