The chief of the Brooksville Police Department has been relieved of duty as the city reportedly moves toward disbanding the agency.

On Thursday, City Manager Mark Kutney announced George Turner had been fired the day before, saying “a number of factors,” had led him to lose confidence in his leadership.

Turner was a 10-year veteran of the agency.  He had worked in law enforcement for 41 years.

Detective Tracey Schofield became Turner’s acting police chief Thursday.  He’s expected to remain with the department through March 27 when the city manager is expected to appoint an Interim Chief of Police.

The move comes as the city negotiates with Hernando County Sheriff Al Neinhuis to take over the police department’s responsibilities.
