The arrest report for a man accused of shooting and killing a Highlands County deputy was released on Wednesday.

Joseph Ables, 69, is accused of shooting and killing Deputy William Gentry, an 8-year veteran of the force.

According to the arrest report, Ables’ drivers license was discovered in the same area where Deputy Gentry was located.

Ables told deputies he remembered a woman coming to his home to ask if he was responsible for shooting her cat.

Ables said he then remembered a man approaching the door, who was wearing a gun belt with a gun.

He told deputies he “blacked out and remembers nothing.”

Ables said the next thing he remembered was being put on the pavement by law enforcement.

He claims to be a Vietnam War veteran who suffers from PTSD.

Ables is a convicted felon in the state of Florida, but was in possession of a functioning firearm and ammunition.

The report concludes by saying Ables had placed the gun allegedly used to shoot Deputy Gentry in the front seat of his vehicle, and it was apparent he was preparing to leave his home with the gun used in the crime.
