(WFLA) – Apple has just announced the upcoming iOS 10 update will make it easy for users to become organ donors.

Once the update is available this fall, iPhone users will be able to sign up to be an organ, eye and tissue donor using Apple’s Health App. All registrations will be sent directly to the National Donate Life Registry which is managed by Donate Life America.

There is a need for more organ donors. Officials from Donate Life America say on average, one person died every hour in the United States waiting for an organ transplant. Over 120,000 Americans are waiting for a lifesaving transplant.

Officials say each organ donor can save as many as eight lives and heal many more through the gift of tissue and eye donation.

In the late 80s, Evelyn Colon-Legon was diagnosed with Hepatitis C.

Colon-Legon said, “I really didn’t grasp what the danger of it really was.”

She was warned she’d eventually need a new liver, so she kept up her with treatments and went on with her life. But reality soon set in. In 2006 she began experiencing liver failure. And while fearing for her life, she waited for an organ transplant.

Colon-Legon said, “We’d go to bed and [my husband would] touch me several times to make sure I was alive, it was very scary.”

On January 7, 2008, she received a new liver and a life free from fear.

Now the hope is – Apple’s newly updated health app can do the same for others.

Betsy Edwards with LifeLink said, “Unfortunately not everyone gets the same success story that Evelyn had. Roughly 18 to 20 people die each day because there is not enough organs available for transplant.”

Nationwide, there are more than 120,000 people just like Evelyn who are waiting for a transplant. By the push of a button, you could potentially make a big difference.

Colon-Legon said, “The question is, why not? You’re not God, you’re not a scientist, you’re not in the medical field. To think that you as a person could save lives.”

Edwards said, “What better legacy to leave behind than having your last deed here on earth saving the life of another person.”

iOS 10 will be available this fall as a free software update.
