BRADENTON, Fla. (WFLA) — When the invitation arrived, Gabrielle Fasanelli called her friend and the two opened their envelopes at the same time.
The invitation was from the Cotillion of Sarasota, inviting the 13-year-old to the September 24, 8th grade dinner and dance at the Heritage Oaks Golf and Country Club.
If you have not heard of a cotillion before, it is a formal ball where kids learn social skills and manners.
“I got to be like girly, there so it’s kind of like excitement for me and my friends to be there all together,” said Gabrielle Fasanelli, who lives in Bradenton.
Her Mom sent in the $150 fee and they both thought that things were set…. until Tuesday, when the Cotillion President called to uninvite Gabrielle because she did not live in Sarasota.
Leading her to think, “Where are your manners?”
“Why go through all of that? Knowing where she lives, knowing where she goes to school. And then cashing my check three weeks later. To call me and say, ‘She’s uninvited’,” said Lisa Fasanelli.
Gabrielle hoped to attend the cotillion, just like her older brother did in 2008, and didn’t live in Sarasota County either.
“I think it’s unfair but like, I see from their point of view how they see it but, they already sent the invitation. I should be able to go,” said Gabrielle.
Cotillion Club of Sarasota President, Teri Sayre tells 8 On Your Side, she is sympathetic to the situation, but members must reside in Sarasota County, and or attend school in the county.
That there is a wait list of eligible families. She also said there are no exceptions, it’s spelled out on the club’s website.
“She was looking forward to it. She couldn’t wait to get to 8th grade, follow her brother’s footsteps and it’s all been taken away from her,” said Lisa Fasanelli, who said she knows of other young people who live in Manatee County, but have attended the Sarasota Cotillion.
Lisa’s Facebook page is blowing up with supporters who think an exception should be made.WHAT OTHERS ARE CLICKING ON RIGHT NOW:
