“Classrooms should be for books and crayons and teaching… and not for guns. Ever.”
At Hillel Academy in Tampa, News Channel 8 assembled a group of seventh and eighth graders to get their opinions on the controversial topic of arming teachers.
They all seemed to agree; they don’t want their teachers carrying guns.
“If in the event of a school shooting or there’s an active shooter on campus, there’s no way to tell if that teacher is actually going to have the courage to put their life ahead of that student’s,” said one student.
Another isn’t opposed to other weapons.
“I don’t get why we’re going from no guns to guns. Why aren’t we like, meeting in the middle… like a Taser?” he said.
Some of these students knew victims in the Stoneman Douglas High School shooting where 17 people were gunned down. They also plan to attend this weekend’s March for Our Lives in Washington D.C.
They have clear opinions about what should be happening.
“We’re going to be the future leaders of this country and it’s good for our voice to be heard,” a student told us.
They said arming teachers isn’t the answer.
“There could be an accident where something could possibly happen or turn the wrong way. They could injure or kill someone else,” said one student.
They all agree that something has to be done.
“Parents shouldn’t have to have to think whether their child’s coming home that same day.”
