TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — A girl is in critical condition after a Tampa shooting, according to police.
The Tampa Police Department said the shooting happened on South Manhattan Avenue near Robinson High School around 8:40 a.m.
School officials told 8 On Your Side that the incident did not occur on campus but in a neighborhood nearby.
When police arrived at the Arbor Flats Apartments on South Manhattan Avenue, they found a young female victim who had been shot.
“There was an altercation between some juveniles, males and females, believed to be high school age here. During this altercation, a juvenile or young female was shot and taken to the hospital,” said Jamel Lanee with the Tampa Police Department.
Cecelia Finneran says she heard the argument outside of her apartment.
“I heard some screaming this morning and I looked out the window because that kind of screaming is not normal. I saw four teenagers running and a little girl, she was holding herself like this, and I didn’t realize she had been shot. I didn’t see any blood or anything,” Finneran said.
Finneran believes she knows who the teens are because she says they’ve caused problems at the apartments before.
“They were jumping off the roof, into the pool and I said, ‘Hey, you guys can’t do that,’ and they were like, ‘who are you?'” Finneran said.
Finneran says she had no idea the argument she heard would develop into a shooting.
“We didn’t know it was going to escalate to that and then you hear shots popped off but I didn’t realize that she’d been hit,” Finneran said.
Tampa police say they are talking to a number of witnesses to identify those involved.
