TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — 20,000 people are expected to pack Raymond James this weekend for Sunset Music Fest. It’s a big concert that’s had some safety issues in the past , some that turned deadly.
Two years ago, two young women died after taking ecstasy. Tampa police say they won’t tolerate any drug use of any kind this year.
Thousands of people come from all over to enjoy the electronic music festival. The 2-day event kicks off on Saturday at 11 am on the sunset stage with Marshmellow.
The festival has a reputation for it’s drug culture and concert goers have overdosed in the past. If you’re going this year T.P.D. is warning you right now, do not try your luck.
“We have a vendor who has worked very closely with public safety so they’ve worked with us, they’ve worked with Tampa Fire rescue, we want everyone to have a good event, but be mindful. Narcotics will not be tolerated,” said Eddie Durkin, Tampa police department
The promoters have thought this event through. There will be cooling stations in case it’s hot, first aid stations if people need medical attention, and of course dozens of first responders nearby in case things get ugly.
Extra staff will be on hand all weekend at Florida Hospital Carrolwood to offer the best care possible to those who may need it.
Though the event doesn’t have the best reputation, it has improved over the years. Last year, arrests were down to 46. In 2015, 61 people were arrested.
The event will happen, rain or shine, unless there is severe weather.
