Tampa man arrested in street racing crash that injured innocent driver; second suspect sought

An illegal street race in Tampa ended in a crash that landed two people in the hospital Wednesday morning.

Shortly before 11 a.m., the Tampa Police Department responded to reports of a crash in the 11300 block of N. Florida Ave.

Initial information showed a blue 2012 Dodge Challenger driven by Michael Heiman, 23, of Tampa was racing a white Dodge Challenger down Florida Ave. at a high rate of speed.

Witnesses observed the vehicles weaving in and out of traffic to avoid slower cars. Police said Heiman did not notice that cars he was approaching were stopped in the outside lane, and over-corrected, causing his car to spin out of control and into northbound traffic where he struck a 2005 Buick, driven by Shawntae Allen.

Both Allen and Heiman were hospitalized with severe, but non-life-threatening injuries.

Heiman was charged with Racing on Public Streets, Driving on a Suspended License, Aggravated Careless Driving, as well as multiple civil citations.

Police are still looking for the driver of the other car.
