President Donald Trump’s executive order to the end the separation of migrant families at the border and in areas such as South Florida has not silenced some of his critics in the Tampa Bay area.
“What about the children who are going to remain in this country once their parents have been deported? How are we going to reunite the children? And then, what are we going to do about the people who are coming here to seek asylum,” said Lakeisha Black, Tampa leader of Women’s March Florida.
Black is one of several organizers of the “Families Belong Together” rally set for Tampa on June 30 in correlation other demonstrations that day across the nation.
She believes the Trump administration’s process of detaining undocumented families has been inhumane.
“Think about the mother with the 4-month-old baby. What kind of violence was she fleeing to travel thousands of miles to just a hope,” Black said.
President Trump posted to Twitter Thursday, putting pressure on Democrats:
“My Administration is acting swiftly to address the illegal immigration crisis on the Southern Border. Loopholes in our immigration laws all supported by extremist open border Democrats…and that’s what they are – they’re extremist open border Democrats….”
Jim Waurishuk, chairman of the Hillsborough County Republican party and retired Air Force Colonel, believes the president is on the right track with deterring illegal immigration into the country.
Waurishuk said part of the blame is on the adults who bring children to the border and said, “The kids are being used as a pawn.”
“Where you’re endangering kid’s lives by allowing them to travel long distances into this country, what parent does that,” Waurishuk said.
Locations for rallies in the area will be posted to www.familiesbelongtogether.org.
