RIVERVIEW, Fla. (WFLA) – A 27-year-old grand theft suspect was shot and killed after an incident with deputies in Bloomingdale on Tuesday.
According to the sheriff’s office, deputies found the suspect, Dylan Ray Scott, parked outside a McDonald’s in Riverview around 10 p.m. Sunday. A woman was in his truck.
Scott was wanted on charges of grand theft and resisting arrest, and had a warrant out for his arrest, according to deputies. He was instructed to get out of the truck, but stepped on the gas and started driving down an embankment and into traffic on Bloomingdale Avenue, crashing into a minivan. Deputies said the minivan driver was hospitalized after complaining of chest pains.
Deputies responded to the crash to help the injured driver and detain Scott. They said he refused to leave his truck and was asked repeatedly to show his hands, but refused and said he had a gun.
The woman passenger was escorted out of the truck.
“After several minutes of Scott ignoring orders to show his hands, Scott motioned for a gun, causing four deputies to fire shots. Scott was transported to Tampa General Hospital where he died from his injuries,” a sheriff’s office spokeswoman said in a press release.
No deputies were injured.
The sheriff’s office identified the deputies involved in the shooting as Sergeant Michael Hannaford, Corporal Steven Schneider, Deputy Timothy Miskell and Deputy Devin Wooden. The deputies will be placed on administrative leave, which is standard protocol for officer-involved shootings.
Deputies said Scott had a lengthy criminal record including charges of fleeing and attempting to elude police, reckless driving, resisting an officer without violence, burglary of an occupied dwelling, drug possession, resisting an officer with violence, and battery on a law enforcement officer, among other charges.
“These deputies did a textbook job of trying to get this suspect to surrender himself. They pleaded with him to show his hands, stopping short of begging him not to reach for the firearm he repeatedly said he had,” said Sheriff Chad Chronister. “There is no perfect outcome in situations like this, but I am thankful that none of our deputies were hurt and that we were able to keep innocent citizens on the roadway safe as this situation unfolded. In the interest of openness and transparency, we are working with the FDLE as they conduct an independent investigation into this incident.”
