TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) – Fired up residents of Rocky Point will get together to protest a proposed project that they believe would destroy beautiful waterfront.
Many people rent in the area and nearby there are hotels, but many say they don’t want this project to happen, not because it’ll ruin their views but because it would hurt wildlife.
The 9-acre lagoon is described as calming by many and it’s full of fish, dolphin and manatees.
Right now, the area is zoned as ‘water’ but the Hillsborough County Planning Commission is considering rezoning it to residential.
If that happens, a private developer wants to come in and put in townhomes. Three acres of the lagoon would be dredged and filled, which many don’t want.
Furthermore, no private developer has filled the waters in Tampa Bay in at least 20 years.
The last time that happened, neighborhoods like Snell Isle and Davis Islands were created.
“I’ve seen the plans and the project will extend further left from where I live so it won’t even effect my view. It has nothing to do with my view. It has to do with the ecology. The negative effect it’s going to have on the wildlife here in the Tampa Bay area and the precedent this will set for future building projects like this,” said Stacey Pryor, who is a concerned resident.
On Tuesday night, a group of people will rally at the Westin rooftop and then on Thursday they will beg Tampa City Council members to not allow the project to move forward.
