Congestion at the I-4 and I-275 interchange in downtown Tampa gets worse year after year, clogged with more drivers.
According to the most recent traffic-count data, daily traffic on westbound I-4 to southbound I-275 skyrocketed from 49,000 in 2015 to 64,500 in 2017.
The Florida Department of Transportation hopes to make traffic flow a little better, by preventing congestion-causing crashes at the junction. FDOT is installing a series of “advanced warning” signs on 275 and I-4. When traffic queuing is detected, “Prepare To Stop When Flashing” signs, with flashing beacons, will activate, alerting drivers to slow down.
The I-275 signs will be mounted overhead, and a side-mounted sign will be installed on I-4. Work is underway, and expected to be completed this summer.
