TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — Police are investigating a shooting that left a man dead in Tampa’s Lowry Park neighborhood late Thursday night.

At about 11:30 p.m., police responded to reports of shots fired in the 8500 block of North Hammer Avenue and found the man suffering from gunshot wounds.

He died at the scene.

Police said the shooter remained at the scene and was cooperating with their investigation.

The man told police he was sitting in his car in his friend’s driveway when the other man pulled up, got out of his vehicle and started banging on the car window and yelling. The man said he thought he had a handgun in his waistband, and feared for his life, so he shot the man.

Police later learned the weapon the deceased was holding was fake.

It was not immediately clear if charges will be filed. An investigation is ongoing.
