Hillsborough County detectives said a fight over a television channel is what led to the shooting death of a woman and her son Sunday evening.

Yarelis Perez can’t believe her neighbors were shot and killed.

“It was very shocking to me. I literally live upstairs from them and I did not hear anything,” said Perez.

Detectives said the suspected shooter, Tyrone Johnson, is the woman’s boyfriend.

Perez said the boy was her son.

Deputies said they lived together at Mariner’s Cove apartments in Tampa for a year.

Investigators said Johnson and the woman got into an argument after he turned the television channel to football.

“Neighbors said that they heard some arguing. I didn’t hear it. I heard a scream. At 6:45 p.m., I heard a scream.”

According to Johnson, the argument continued in the master bedroom.

He claims she pushed him to the ground.

Shortly afterwards, Johnson claims the child came in the room and started to attack him as well.

That’s when he said he started shooting.

Residents said the 10-year-old was liked by everyone.

“That’s terrible, ’cause the young man. Whether they had their issues, which grown ups do, but the young man, I know had nothing to do with this,” said neighbor Bary Podschlne.

He’s charged with murder in the second degree, murder in the first degree, aggravated child abuse and shooting at, within or into a building.

Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister says the 42-year-old lived with the victims for a year on Mariners Cove Court, and actually made the 911 phone call.

We asked Sheriff Chronister about a history of domestic violence. The sheriff says the female victim made two 911 calls in the past year because of domestic violence but those incidents did not involve the individual in custody. He also tells us neither the woman nor Johnson had a history with the Florida Department of Children and Families.

Johnson is expected in court Tuesday for first appearance.
