Traci Lenz says her family suffered severe health problems after moving into base housing at MacDill Air Force Base.
For months she and others have complained to the private company that maintains the housing but Lenz and others feel their complaints were not being handled properly.
Now she feels her voice and others are finally being heard at the highest levels.
Lenz recently traveled to Washington, D.C. for a Senate hearing on problems with base housing across the country.
“Each of us thought we just happened to have drawn the bad luck card and got a house that had issues, but when it was all brought together, we seemed to realize that this was an ongoing issue that was across the nation for military families,” said Lenz.
Thursday, Congressman Gus Bilirakis met with the commanding officer at MacDill to hear about the problems.
Bilirakis blames the private companies that own and maintain the base housing.
“I told them we are going to hold them accountable. These people need to be held accountable and I am demanding a third party inspection,” said Bilirakis.
He wants an independent company to inspect all housing at MacDill to determine the extent of the problems.
Traci Lenz says she is hopeful action will now be taken.
“I think if that plan is implemented well that it does have the ability to make a huge change for our military families,” said Lenz.
