HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA) – A Hillsborough County K9 deputy captured a driver after he attempted to flee the scene of a crash on Monday.

According to the sheriff’s office, a drunk driver caused a head-on collision Monday evening while driving a stolen vehicle.

Vincent Virgilio, 29, of Riverview, was driving just east of the intersection of Bloomingdale Avenue and Watson Road when he swerved into the eastbound lanes and struck Kayla Cowans, 23, of Brandon.
The head-on crash sent Cowans to Tampa General Hospital.

Virgilio fled the scene of the crash on foot.

Aviation and K9 deputies searched for him.

K9 LyCan tracked Virgilio to a wooden shed in a backyard on Yale Circle.

LyCan pulled the suspect to the door and Virgilio was taken into custody.

Virgilio is charged with DUI with serious injury, driving with license canceled, suspended or revoked, grand theft auto and leaving the scene of a crash with serious injury.

He admitted to stealing the vehicle.
