Hillsborough County firefighter Eduardo Torres heard the call go out for a fire on his street Sunday but never imagined it would be his home.

Torres said he was on duty that morning when crews responded to the fire. At first he only heard the street number but immediately went into a panic once he heard it was his house.

Torres said his home was destroyed when he arrived but thankfully his wife, Nicole, and 3-year-old son made it out safely.

Unfortunately, the family dog did not survive.

Hillsborough County Fire Rescue Captain David Raasch said the house suffered severe fire and smoke damage and there is a long road ahead.

Raasch started a GoFundMe page for the family and the support continues to skyrocket.

Raasch wrote on the page, “We are raising money to help with some of the more urgent needs as the Torres family tries to start working through the process of recovery. Any help is truly appreciated in making all of this less burdensome. Thank you for your support.”

Torres said the support has been overwhelming, in a good way, and his family is grateful for the community.
