TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — Leaders with Hillsborough County Public Schools are addressing a problem plaguing districts throughout the area, the bus driver shortage. They’re hoping to fill hundreds of open positions during a series of hiring events.
Shuttling kids to and from school is no small task. Corey Norris knows the ins and outs of the job from decades of experience driving buses.
Now, Norris is the safety and training manager with Hillsborough County Schools. The district is looking to fill 200 driver vacancies.
“It’s a matter of students getting to school on time, not waiting at the bus stop too long where they’re in jeopardy of being injured by motorists. So, it’s very important to us to fill those vacancies so we can have our routes run on time,” Norris said.
According to Norris, some drivers are doubling and tripling up on routes to get students to campuses around the county. He says full benefits, a flexible schedule, and $18.65 starting pay are available.
The school district is hosting the following hiring events:
- Thursday, Jan. 18 from 4-7 p.m. at Riverview High School (11311 Boyette Road, Riverview, FL 33569)
- Wednesday, Jan. 24 from 5-7 p.m. at HCPS Instructional Support Center (2920 N. 40th Street, Tampa, FL 33605)
