Hillsborough School District leaders are promoted their proposed half cent sales tax Friday with an old fashioned ‘“show and tell”’ at one of the 230 schools they hope to fix up with this new tax if voters approve it in November.

Superintendent Jeff Eakins held a news conference and walkabout at Westchase Elementary to talk about the drastic need for capital improvements and show reporters the crumbling air conditioners, need for painting, playground and fire evacuation improvements that the proposed tax will help pay for.

Eakins says if voters approve it, the district will spend at least $500,000 on every school in Hillsborough County. The district will post a complete list of proposed projects which you can read below.

The tax has already proven controversial since educators decided to add it to the ballot after transportation planners added a separate one percent tax to address traffic congestion. If both measures pass on November Election Day Hillsborough’s sales tax will increase from 7 percent to 8 1/2 percent.
