TAMPA (WFLA) – In less than one day, more than $140,000 in private donations were raised to help relocate the controversial Confederate monument outside of the Hillsborough County Courthouse.

Donations poured in after a number of prominent local figures and institutions, including Mayor Bob Buckhorn, Tony Dungy, the Bucs, the Tampa Chamber of Commerce announced they would contribute.

The GoFundMe campaign created by Tampa attorney Tom Scarritt to help fund the statue’s removal went over its $140,000 goal Thursday, organizers announced.

The news comes after Hillsborough County Commissioners passed a motion Wednesday with a vote of 4-2, requiring private donations to fund the statue’s relocation.

Commissioners set a Sept. 16 deadline for $140,000 to be raised. It would cost $300,000 to move the statue and $20,000 in taxpayers’ money has already been spent.

Commissioners Crist, Hagan, White and Murman voted to require no taxpayer dollars be spent to move the memorial. Commissioners said additional taxpayers’ money will not be spent to move the statue.MORE: $300,000 in private funds must be raised to move Hillsborough Confederate statue
