GIBSONTON, Fla. (WFLA) – A Gibsonton man was arrested on Saturday for stabbing a family dog after an argument with his father.

According to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were called to 10013 California Street around 4 p.m.

They learned that Robert Abbott Jr., 34, got into a verbal argument with his father.

During the argument, Abbott Jr. got a knife and stabbed the family’s pit bull mix several times, causing severe injuries.

Deputies discovered Abbott Jr. barricaded inside a bathroom with the knife. He repeatedly refused commands to leave the bathroom and surrender.

After several minutes, Abbott Jr. let deputies into the bathroom and he was taken into custody without incident.

Hillsborough County Animal Services responded to the scene and arranged emergency veterinary care for the injured dog.

Abbott Jr. is facing charges of aggravated animal cruelty and resisting arrest without violence.

The dog’s condition is currently not known.
