A Good Samaritan was killed after they stopped to help a suspected drunk driver who was involved in a crash on I-75 early Sunday morning, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The crash happened at about 4:30 a.m. near the U.S. 301 exit.
According to a report, a 31-year-old woman was traveling southbound in a 2003 Buick LaSabre when she collided with a truck that was stopped in the far left lane. The driver of the truck, George Edwards Evans had been driving under the influence, according to troopers.
Troopers said 59-year-old Wesley Weysham Jr., a retired firefighter, came upon the crash and stopped to help. He pulled Evans out of the truck and onto the inside shoulder of the roadway to provide medical care.
A 24-year-old driver of a Toyota Camry was traveling southbound, did not see what was happening and their vehicle collided with the truck. The impact sent the truck into Weysham, who suffered fatal injuries and died at the scene of the crash. The truck caught fire and was completely burned out.
The driver of the Buick was rushed to Tampa General Hospital with serious injuries.
Evans and the driver of the car that hit Weyshame was hospitalized with minor injuries.
Charges are pending, according to the report.
The roadway has since reopened.
