Overturned truck spills sand along I-275 in Tampa, snarling traffic for hours

TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — Traffic is moving again after a crash caused major delays on Interstate 275 in Tampa on Wednesday.

The chain reaction collision happened in the southbound lanes near Armenia Ave. during the busy morning commute.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), four vehicles were involved in the crash: two Ford pickup trucks, a Dodge Challenger and a Kenworth dump truck.

At 7:43 a.m., a Ford F250 approached slowing traffic, failed to slow down and was rear-ended by a Ford F150. The pickups crashed into a concrete wall on the shoulder, sending the F150 back into traffic.

The F150 hit the Dodge Challenger before colliding with the dump truck, causing both vehicles to flip, according to FHP. The dump truck spilled sand and diesel fuel onto the highway, shutting down all but one southbound lane for nearly three hours.

The driver of the F150 was seriously hurt in the series of collisions. The drivers of the other vehicles sustained minor injuries.
