TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) – Construction on The Sail Pavilion at the Tampa Convention Center is nearing an end, News Channel 8 learned on Friday.

The new “Sail Plaza” should be open within the next 60 days.

While The Sail Pavilion has been open throughout construction, the new Sail Plaza will offer additional seating and shade for Tampa visitors and natives alike. That new seating will bring guests closer to the Riverwalk and the water.

New restaurant “Big Rays” will open at the plaza, offering food with Tampa Bay area flair, such as grouper sandwiches.

The Sail Pavilion will continue to operate, serving its signature drinks alongside a brand new menu as well.

The restrooms are being renovated to be twice the size as previously designed and will not feature air conditioning.

Una Garvey, Acting Director of the Tampa Convention Center, is excited about the expansion.

“Because Tampa is growing. Tampa is a city that’s actually in the burst of an explosion of things that are happening. We are excited about everything that’s going on in our community, from our Sail to the new landing that we put in that people can go up and people can enjoy the waterfront from a different perspective,” Garvey said.

She said the Convention Center wanted to incorporate an event space for its clients. The Sail Plaza is designed to bring the community, those at the Convention Center and Tampa visitors together.

Garvey couldn’t discuss details for The Sail Plaza’s grand opening, but you can stay tuned to WFLA.com and WFLA Daisy Ruth’s Facebook page for more details going forward.
