A former building inspector claims Hillsborough County overloads its people.
He says one day last year, he was assigned as many as 91 inspections.
Benjamin Buckley worked for Hillsborough County for just over a year.
He resigned his Building Inspector 2 position in April.
In his resignation letter, that was also sent to county commissioners, Buckley wrote, “One thing for sure is 91 inspections are impossible in one day. I was assigned 91 on October 21st, 2014.”
Buckley claims he was never assigned less than 14 inspections per day, but usually more than 30.
“That overload creates undo stress and greatly slows productivity,” he wrote.
In Hillsborough County, building inspectors check new construction, remodels, as well as commercial construction.
“If we’re under a lot of pressure, you know, I believe that something could be missed,” Buckley told 8 On Your Side. The county claims it assigned Benjamin Buckley the same number of inspections as other building inspectors.
“Here’s October 27th, I was assigned 37,” Buckley stated as he scanned his records. The next day, October 28th, his log book shows he was assigned 29 inspections, then 34 on October 29th. A day later he was assigned another 34 inspections.
On November 10th his records show he was assigned 43 inspections, on November 12th, 54, November 13th, another 72 inspections.
“We’re playing beat the clock if you will, and that shouldn’t be a condition on this type of work, it shouldn’t be beat the clock,”Buckley said.
