Passenger killed in Highlands County rollover crash

A 22-year-old passenger was killed in a rollover crash in Highlands County on Saturday, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

The crash occurred at about 10:50 a.m. on Placid Lakes Blvd., about half a mile north of State Road 70.

Troopers said a Ford F-150 driven by a 16-year-old boy was traveling north on the roadway when it failed to negotiate a turn and traveled off the roadway. The vehicle got back onto the road before it left the road again and overturned.

A passenger, Uriel Martinez suffered serious injuries and was rushed to Lee Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.

The 16-year-old driver was also taken to Lee Memorial, where he remains in critical condition.

Both passengers were wearing seatbelts and alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the crash, troopers said.

Charges are pending, according to the report.
