HIGHLANDS COUNTY, FL (WFLA) – A science teacher at Hill-Gustat Middle School in Sebring was arrested for sex crimes involving one of her students, according to the Highlands County Sheriff’s Office.

Bond for Stacy Hooks, 38, was set at a hefty $625,000 Friday morning.

She’s charged with cruelty toward a child/transmitting info harmful to minors, lewd and lascivious behavior with a victim between ages 12 and 16, and obscene communication/traveling to meet after using a computer to lure a child.

There are nine counts in all.

During a court appearance Friday morning in Sebring, where Hooks appeared via closed-circuit television, she asked the judge to refrain from reading the charges aloud. He obliged.

But, a state prosecutor said Hooks had sex and oral sex with a minor and traded photographs with the teenager as well. He’s a student in her classroom, an arrest report shows. Hooks also sent the student nude photographs including a collage of pictures of her buttocks.

Hooks appeared teary-eyed during the appearance, which lasted a little more than 10 minutes.

After the hearing, family members refused to speak to News Channel 8. “No questions,” one woman said as she hurried from the courthouse.

The director of the Highlands County School District human resources department tells News Channel 8 that Hooks will be placed on leave without pay during the criminal investigation.

She has been with the district for 15 years and has taught at elementary schools and middle schools. She has been at Hill Gustat Middle School since 2012, according to school district officials.
