TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) – Retired Tampa Police Department K9 Koda passed away, officers announced Friday.
“It is with great sadness that we say goodbye today,” police said. “You should remember his name, not only for the outstanding bravery and service that he bestowed upon the citizens of Tampa, but for his greatest act as a hero.”
That act was the capture of Corporal Mike Roberts’ killer. Roberts was shot and killed in August 2009. Koda tracked down his killer, who surrendered and was eventually convicted in the case. More information about Roberts’ murder is available here.
Koda retired in 2012 and lived with his partner, retired K9 Master Patrol Officer Sandy Learned. “There is no doubt in our hearts that Koda is in the company of Corporal Mike Roberts and the rest of the K9s that have passed before. Rest in peace K9 Koda. Thank you for your service,” police said.
