Herd of buffalo on the move in Bethlehem after swimming across Hudson River

BETHLEHEM, N.Y. (NEWS10) – A herd of buffalo was seen traveling across the Capital Region this morning.

State Police say they have been moved to Bethlehem Industrial Park for a staging area, but earlier officials were running around trying to keep up with them.

The herd of buffalo came out of the woods Friday morning as police had their rifles out, ready to shoot. They crossed the road onto the grass and onto the thruway. Now they are heading west. A tractor trailer did honk at them, but they crossed safely.

The owner of Gem Farms was not willing to speak on camera, but did confirm it is their buffalo. They also say the fence at the farm broke down, and the entire herd swam across the Hudson River. It is not known how the fence got broken.

At this time, the owner says they have no choice but to shoot the buffalo, which is a very significant loss for them.

Police are reminding everyone to be careful because they are very dangerous animals and can run at about 40 miles an hour. The search continues until they are secured.
