GULFPORT, Fla. (WFLA) – The mayor of Gulfport, Sam Henderson, is upset with Pinellas County Schools. He believes the last day of classes should have been cancelled due to Tropical Storm Colin.
His city is seeing flooding, road closures, and even a fallen tree blocking a road.
“I’m just not sure what value they hope to gain from being open inclement weather when it’s the last day of school and a partial day as is,” he said.
Pinellas County School Spokeswoman Lisa Wolf tells 8 On Your Side, students can stay home because of weather. Teachers and staff can also stay home and work out the absence with their supervisors.

“During inclement weather, Pinellas County Schools works collaboratively with Pinellas County Emergency Management to make the best decision for our students and staff. Closing schools creates a hardship for many families throughout the county, and that must be considered. The school district keeps safety a priority and we are being as flexible as possible and offering excused absences for students.”
