HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, Fla. (WFLA) – TECO crews have capped a gas leak that forced the evacuation of a shopping center, two homes, and a Town N’ Country apartment complex.

At 10:45 am Hillsborough County Fire Rescue received a 911 call about a gas leak located behind the Aldi Shopping Center at the intersection of Sheldon Road and West Hillsborough Ave in Tampa.

Crews arrived on scene and reported a heavy smell of gas in the area.

Due to the amount of gas leaking, and weather conditions on scene, firefighters evacuated the Aldi Shopping Center, two nearby homes and one apartment building.

Firefighters and TECO crews determined that construction workers who were using an auger at the scene struck a 2-inch subsurface gas line.

It took Firefighters and crews from TECO Gas about  an hour and fifteen minutes to dig down to the line and stop the leaking gas.

Everyone who was evacuated has been allowed to return to their homes and businesses.WHAT OTHERS ARE CLICKING ON RIGHT NOW
