A former nurse in Germany has admitted to killing 100 patients, making him one of the country’s deadliest post-war serial killers.
Niels Hoegel, 41, made the confession during his trial on Tuesday.
Hoegel is accused of using various non-prescription drugs to kill his patients at two hospitals in northern Germany between 2000 and 2005. The victims were between the ages of 34 and 96.
The former nurse said he did it to show off his resuscitation skills and to fight off boredom.
CNN reports that Hoegel has previously said he felt “euphoric” when he was able to bring a patient back to life and was devastated whenever he failed.
He is already serving a life sentence for six convictions including homicide and attempted homicide. Those six convictions led authorities to investigate hundreds of deaths.
According to CNN, police say the exact number of murders may never be known because some of the possible victims have been cremated.
