A woman who was arrested after deputies found three dead dogs in a freezer and two children living in a house filled with animal feces has been sentenced to probation.
Victoria Kanger, 35, was arrested last December and charged with child neglect. She pleaded no contest and was sentenced to 36 months of probation.
Officials with the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office said deputies went to the home on Hastings Road in Pierson after they got a tip that Kanger had been neglecting her children.
At the home, deputies said her 5 and 14-year-old children were living in deplorable conditions.
Investigators said the home was full of fleas, cockroaches were climbing on all surfaces and the carpet was littered with animal feces.
Deputies also found three dead dogs wrapped in plastic and cardboard inside the freezer, an arrest report said.
Kanger claimed she couldn’t bury the dogs because she didn’t have a shovel.
