The first white shark to ever be tagged by OCEARCH in Canadian waters has now made its way to the Gulf of Mexico.
OCEARCH tagged Nova the shark back in September. On Sunday, he pinged in the Gulf of Mexico, off the Florida coast.
Nova is an adult male white shark. OCEARCH data shows he weighs 1,186 pounds and is 11-and-a-half feet long.
The shark was originally tagged in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia on Sept. 24.
On Dec. 23, Nova pinged in the Gulf at 3:51 p.m. A map from OCEARCH puts the ping well off the coast in the Naples area.
The latest ping means Nova has traveled about 2,163 miles in just 103 days.
Nova’s first ping near Florida was recorded on Nov. 29 near Daytona Beach. He pinged twice near Key West in early December before making his way to the Gulf.
You can follow Nova’s journey on the Nova the Shark Twitter page or check his latest pings on the OCEARCH website.
