TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — A pilot was rescued on Sunday after a small plane crashed in the Lower Keys.

According to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, the pilot, 40-year-old Adam Barney of Orlando, was rescued roughly three miles off Sawyer Key.

In the video, Barney tells Deputy Trevor Pike, who rescued him, that he was heading to the Keys to pick up a friend of his. Barney was in the water for over an hour, after the plane went down around 10:18 a.m.

“That was definitely one of the craziest experiences of my life,” Barney tells the deputy.

“You’re alive,” the deputy tells him.

Barney was flying solo on an Aero Commander 500.

The deputy transported the pilot to the paramedics who were waiting on Cudjoe Key. Thankfully, there were no life-threatening injuries.

The crash is under investigation by Aviation authorities.
