‘Number’ of manatees reported dead in Everglades

National Park Service officials are working with Florida wildlife officials to figure out why several manatees were found dead in the Everglades recently.

A post on the official Everglades National Park Facebook page says a “number” of dead manatees have been reported recently.

At this point, park officials say necropsies on the manatees are inconclusive. According to the Facebook post, biologists are looking into whether environmental factors like cold weather and red tide played a role.

“Our park staff are working closely with FWC biologists to monitor the situation and coordinate an aerial survey,” the post said.

Anyone who sees an injured, sick or dead manatee is asked to call the FWC Wildlife Alert hotline at 1-888-404-3922.
