SPRINGFIELD, Fla. (WMBB/WFLA) — Officials in the Florida panhandle are battling a wildfire that is currently 1,000 acres and growing.
According to the Florida Forest Service, about 600 homes have been evacuated.
The Florida Forest Service has deployed more than a dozen tractor plow units as well as multiple helicopters to the area with more than 200 firefighters from across the panhandle working to help suppress the wildfire.
The fire is currently moving north/northeast and a State of Emergency has been declared. The so-called “Adkins Road Fire” has destroyed at least two homes and damaged dozens of homes.
Local news outlets report both dry conditions and debris from Hurricane Michael are causing additional issues for crews.
The containment of the fire is unknown at this time, and the cause of the fire is under investigation.
