BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. (WESH) — Ahead of a big holiday weekend in ten days, Brevard County beaches are slammed, but not in a good way for tourism.
They’re slammed with seaweed: piles of it. Acres of it.
Many of the people coming to Brevard County have been surprised at the mounds of seaweed, all along the surf line.
It’s a bit of a minefield as you walk toward the water. It’s known as beach wrack or sargassum, and it’s beneficial to marine life and birds.
While it’s good for wildlife, it’s not necessarily good for tourism as it bounces back from the plague.
Sometimes the beach wrack sticks around and smells; sometimes it washes away overnight during high tide.
Beachgoers could be dealing with it for another couple of weeks.
